Alternative 2: Partial Naturalized Creek

In Alternative 2, the existing armored levees on Ballona Creek are removed, but the southern armored levee is maintained further eastward than it is in Alternative 1. The Creek is still realigned to flow in a natural meandering pattern, and the land north of the creek is lowered to create a connected floodplain similar to what exists on the south side of the creek today. New, native wetland and upland (for example, coastal scrub, woodland or other) habitats are created and enhanced but to a lesser extent than in Alternative 1; that is, in the area bounded on the east by State Route 90 (SR-90) (north of Ballona Creek) and Lincoln Boulevard (south of Ballona Creek), Fiji Way on the north, Cabora Drive on the south, and to a point just west of the Culver Blvd. junction with Jefferson Blvd.  The area in the west that is south of the Creek and north of Culver Blvd remains managed marsh, i.e. existing tide gates limit tidal interaction with the Reserve.

New earthen levees surround the Reserve. They are broad and gently sloping away from roadways and buildings around the reserve, protecting development from any potential flooding of Ballona Creek. The new levees are set back from the Creek, connecting the Creek with its floodplain and allowing a variety of coastal wetland habitats to form there.

New trails and bike paths encourage safe use by visitors, and there are gateways with educational and art installations. A new parking structure along Fiji Way reduces the existing parking area footprint, and improvements to the existing dirt parking lot located off of Culver Boulevard at Pershing Drive make it safer and more appealing to visitors and local residents.
